Assorted mostly place-anchored stuff

Portland stuff: those of you who will be in Portland either of the the last two weekends in September, I've come across something that oddly fascinates me: An Opera based on "Too Much Coffee Man." Click that, and look at the pudgy fellow with espresso for a head. Does that not intrigue you? Will you perhaps watch this opera and report back?
Oakland stuff: does anyone want to help me plant free daffodils in medians? The City of Oakland/Home Depot collaboration to hand out free daffodil bulbs to anyone who will plant them in public spaces continues this year. Bulbs to be passed out Saturday October 21. I have a shovel, and the median in front of the old folks tower near me is lonely.
Speaking of the old folks tower, I am concerned. I looked enviously on the tower, with its nice views and balconies and parking... On the internet, I found it was for old folks. I looked closer, and I saw that there is wire grating over all the balconies... To keep the old folks in? If there are hundreds of old folks living just down the block, how come I never see any? Do they get to leave?
But then I was home during the day a few times, and I did see some old folks walking about the area. So... I dunno. Hopefully it's as nice a place to live in as it looks. I just wish I'd see them out on the balconies occasionally.
On Nancy Nadel's website (where I went to put in a good word for a potential 42-story condo in the park 5 blocks away) (which site, BTW, I had to park in front of last Sunday evening, because there was after 20 minutes of circling no closer spot that didn't require moving the car at 8 AM) (Grrr) I find that next Friday is to be Oakland's annual "CarFree Day". I'll be in Seattle, so hey, no car moving from me...
My bicycle has been getting cooler and cooler; it will shortly become the coolest bicycle EV4R, and I'll be sure to post video. For the present, though, I'm very pleased to find today that the random mount on the handlebars fits the Catseye headlight I have. The old bike with the Catseye mount got stolen, but the detachable headlight was in my room being a flashlight. The new bike at a garage sale came with mount but nothing for it. Now, the circle is again unbroken! All I have to do is make sure the guy I got it from had it aimed at the right spot.
The new bike also came with a dinger bell of the sort I like, the sort that just makes one Dinggg! when you thwip it, the sort that was on the old stolen bike. Good to be able to ride by people carrying "Honk for Impeachment" banners and go "Dinggg! Dinggg!" I've also used it to Ding people who just couldn't bear to stop driving like idiots. Much fun. Anyway, I swapped it over to the right hand so I could put a rear view mirror on the left, but I'm wondering if I'm missing a nut from the rear view mirror. Perhaps the internet will know.
