Ozomatli will be in town! At the Fillmore! Best venue in the Bay Area, awesome band, only $25! I am totally going. And if you're cool and lucky you can go with. Anyone who needs to know the spiff that is Ozomatli, I'll mail you a CD. Actually, I may mail you a CD anyway. (Actually, the CD reader in my computer seems to have failed, so I might not be able to manage that for a bit...)

I bought "Street Signs" because I loved "Who Discovered America". Sound I hadn't heard before; they mix rap and middle-eastern and piano and hispanic. It comes out really bright. It's great music to have on when stuck in traffic late for something, or on your way to a session of asskicking... The beat carries you into a good mindset.

I'm thinking Friday the 2nd of December, when they're playing with the son of Santana. Saturday, son of Santana and a hip-hop band from Oakland; and Ozomatli is really my only foray into hip-hop so far, so I'm leaning towards focusing.

It's well-knit music. You should check it out.

I see their 2001 album, Embrace the Chaos is up on Yahoo Unlimited, so I'll check that out today. Most of the song titles are in Spanish, and if the lyrics are likewise, I may end up losing interest in this album part way through. I'll certainly give the other albums a listen later, though.

A couple strange suggestions back atcha: I just became aware of Jonathan Coulton through [livejournal.com profile] matociquala. His white boy cover of "Baby Got Back" is pretty darn funny, and his album Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow is fun if you like to hear someone experimenting with music and geeky lyrics.

On the other... something side of geekiness is George Hrab. Intelligent and very jazzy with a bit of rock thrown in. I first heard of him from an interview on the Skepticality podcast. Listening to the interview will give a good idea of his music and his personality. Cool stuff.
