I look on this "52-book challenge" thing many of my friends are doing with bemusement. For me, that would be like saying, "In 2006, I will play at least 52 hours of Civilization." "Gee, I don't do nearly enough crack: an ounce a week in 2006!"

It's nearly 2 in the morning. I'm just saying. ;)

I think a big part of the challenge is the blogging about the book, not just reading it. Otherwise, what would we do with the other three quarters of the year?

I can't even imagine reading a book a week on a general basis. 15 years ago, no problem. Now? Not so much. I generally have too much shit to do. Plus, I have a healthy comic book addiction, which eats up a lot of reading hours when the new comics come in. On occasion I'll find a book that is both light and compelling enough for me to plow through in a week or less. But like right now? I'm reading "The Sunday Philosophy Club," the first in a "new" series by the guy who wrote "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency." It's not nearly as charming as his other series, so I don't read it as often, and it takes me longer. Then there's stuff like "What is the Dharma?" that I've been slowly working away at. I think I may just need to start over, because I've read it so sporadically that I think I've lost so much of the information.

Next on my pile is Martin's "A Feast For Crows" which I don't think I could read in a week if I tried.

See, what I'm saying is that I pick up a book and that's it until the book is over. No eating, no sleeping, no answering email... I seem to read about 60 pages an hour, so opening a book = 6 hours vanish.

For me, the triumph is not reading. ;) George RR Martin's stuff is among the stuff I'm currently triumphing over. Well, that and I haven't located the book since the move.

Yeah, my wife is about the same. I polled her, and she's claiming 75-100/hour. Me? I don't read that damn fast. In part because I'm too ADD to read more than a few pages at a go.

I think the last time I had a real, hard core marathon of reading that really stood out for me was when I sat down and read one of L. Ron Hubbard's "Mission: Earth" books in 5 or 6 hours. And that was back in junior high. But then, in junior high I had very few friends and a lot of time on my hands in the summer. I'd ride my bike to the library (5 miles away) once a week and get a bag of books that I'd bring home and plow through. I usually don't have the time or focus to do that now.

Dude. Liz reads like four times faster than me. At the same time, 52 books in a year doesn't seem like much of a challenge to me. Though I think 52 books in a year would actually be a challenge for her -- sort of like trying to cut down to a fraction of the crack you normally take.

I don't have the binge problem, though. I usually have at least two books going at a time, and I'll just read parts of them at a time. (I'm not sure how to treat some things, though. In my reading list, I usually include graphic novels and occaisionally short books or young adult books.)
