"There are two types of humans: women, and people; and when I act like a person, I get accused of acting like a man."

Come see how this applies to the pretty Tarot Card quiz I saw first at [livejournal.com profile] follybard's!

So I run though the test, and I get:

You are Temperance

Time. Ages. Transformation. Involuntary change

Temperance is another card of aspiration, but also of much change. It often
represents complex situations. Positively, you can harmonize contrary
forces.

Temperance is, on a surface level, about "tempering." The original pouring from cup to cup might have been about cutting wine with water. So this is a card about moderation. There is, however, another angle to the card, that of merging seemingly impossible opposites. Sagittarius, the centaur, merges beast and man into a unique creature. And then there is the bow and arrow, one moving, one stationary, working together to point the way. Temperance may be, at first glance, a warning for you to "temper" your behavior, to cut your wine with water. But it may also be a reminder to that seemingly irreconcilable opposites may not be irreconcilable at all. Belief that fiery red and watery blue cannot be merged may be the only thing standing in the way of blending the two. Change the belief, measure out each with care, and you can create otherworldly violet.

This left me rather "meh", for while temperance is a thing I approve of and a card I like, the accompanying text was frankly not laudatory enough. What's all this bullshit about things not being as irreconcilable as they look? And the suggestion of intemperance? I figured the quiz was probably paying too much attention to the "yes, I like drinking and dirty stories and lots of other things on the clicky list", so I went back to see what I could do about that. Alas, I do like drinking etc, and the only question I could change was: perhaps I am more "androgynous" than "female".

Have a look at the result:

You are The Sun

Happiness, Content, Joy.

The meanings for the Sun are fairly simple and consistent.

Young, healthy, new, fresh. The brain is working, things that were muddled come clear, everything falls into place, and everything seems to go your way.

The Sun is ruled by the Sun, of course. This is the light that comes after the long dark night, Apollo to the Moon's Diana. A positive card, it promises you your day in the sun. Glory, gain, triumph, pleasure, truth, success. As the moon symbolized inspiration from the unconscious, from dreams, this card symbolizes discoveries made fully consciousness and wide awake. You have an understanding and enjoyment of science and math, beautifully constructed music, carefully reasoned philosophy. It is a card of intellect, clarity of mind, and feelings of youthful energy.

Oh! So, as long as I'm not female, I get to be a winner? Smart, triumphant, and glorious. But valuing competition and sunlight and winning as a female means that I ought to "temper my behavior", and spend my life working to "harmonize contrary forces"? I guess I just wasn't getting that a woman's place was to be sweet and make sure that the powers in the world got along. Where was my head at, with this bizarre idea that I was a power?

I wonder what I'd get if I was a full male, with the exact same answers as the previous two tries?

My favorite was when I was involved with the debate team in high school.

If you were male and were aggressive, you got kudos on your ballot for being "confident" or "assertive."

If you were female and were aggressive, you were criticized for being "bitchy."

I myself have wondered whether I would still get labeled an "abrasive" gamer if I was male. I considered setting up a separate online existence to test this, but the thought of gaming again with that labeller is loathesome.

Oh, best meme-critique ever!

I'm screeching with fierce appreciative laughter...

and hey. I just realized... have we ever played a board game? Because... I could kick your ass, you know!
Six ways before breakfast!

Bring it on.

I seem to recall that there was an opportunity for you to play a board game with me at the PenSFA party, but you instead chose to dodge the inevitable smackdown and continue in your proper role as a hostess. ::snooty look::

Or was it I, harmonizing the forceful boors at the party by distracting them with a game? I don't know! It's all so confusing! Like math!

Dude. I just tried this out and posted my results (for both male and female) on my livejournal, as Tarot Meme and Gender.

That's some seriously creepy shit. I get "oh, isn't violet pretty!", you get "you should stay away from drugs and alcohol like the doctor said..."

Interesting: the developer's using JavaScript to compute the major arcana card.

The choice of gender affects the rest of the play:

for (i = 0; i < f.one.length; i++) if (f.one[i].checked) value = f.one[i].value;
	if (value == "1") { zz++; aa++; dd++; ee++; ff++; gg++; ii++; jj++; ll++; mm++; oo++; pp++; ss++; }
	if (value == "2") { bb++; cc++; ff++; hh++; jj++; kk++; nn++; pp++; qq++; rr++; tt++; uu++; }
	if (value == "3") { ff++; jj++; pp++; }

It's late, so I don't feel like unraveling how I managed to get the same card (19) for both male and female.

The main thing I want to do is rewrite the code... so much duplication.

Self-Administered Clue

Ack. I'm overthinking this. It's not as much the code, but the interpretations given the the 'male' vs. 'female' cards, that's the issue.

Okay, I think I'm back on the same page as the rest of you.

I find the mechanics of the quiz fascinating! I mean, the confimation that gender was the most important thing in the quiz was neat. And so far as I can tell, the writer thinks that there is nearly no overlap between males and females.

Plus, I'm fascinated by how online quizzes work, since I'd like to make one, and none of the current codes out there offer me what I want.

I wonder if the developer of the quiz modified it as I tried the experiment and got "The Sun" both as a woman and a man.

I got 'The Devil' as a woman or a man.

Which does not, frankly, come as news.
