zdashamber: a blue honda insight (insight)

Sitting here trying to remember something I'd thought to add to the Christmas list I need to mail to my family... Survivalist gear?

Brain: No, you cannot put "shotgun" on your Christmas list.

So! Alas, I stumbled into old habits for a bit, despite John Macdonald's suggestion that I keep half a tank of gas in the car at all times. My tank: 10.1 gallons, I think. Amount of gas I added after work: 10.124 gallons. Hee! I should look back through the records to see if that's an all-time high, higher than the time after we coasted out of the Grapevine into LA en route to Ian's. In the middle of the hills: Silent E: "Um, the gas light just came on." Me: "Don't worry, we've got 50 miles left after the gas light comes on, and it's mostly downhill..." And it was so! Barely. ;)

Also finally refilled the tires after the last oil change (where they invariably let out air to a safe 36 psi all around. "Safety." Psssh.). No wonder I've been averaging a distressing 52.8 mpg! Lucy feels so much lighter on her feet now. (For those new to the party: My car, 2004 Honda Insight, named Lucy Simone, stealth blue-black in color.)

There will at some point be a jump bag/full survival/evac post... Summary: I'll take the car as far as its slenderness and infinite mileage will go, and then I'll pull my bicycle out of the back to make it through one of the 3 passes through the hills which will without question be fux0red in a "whole Bay Area evacuates" situation... That's, in fact, the main reason I have a bicycle. You guys should all check out Accordion Guy's preparedness quiz meantime.

I expanded on Jim's jump bag into a jump backpack. I took photos of the assembly that I need to turn into a Flickr set.

Yay, another hybrid geek!

I've got an 'old model' Prius (2001). Would have gone with the Insight, but I couldn't fit the babyseat in.

Love 'em!

Yeah, I saw your car as we were leaving the Edgefield! I would have commented, but you know, end of the con glazedness.

The 2-seatedness usually works out for me, but there have been times when more would be mice. I once drove 7 blocks from the BART station to my house with my sister and her husband and their luggage... My sister was draped over her husband with her head wedged between the seats and her legs on top of his in the footwell... There was no space in the front right that was not full of person. The car was inches off the ground. We coasted to a stop at a light, and in the right lane was a guy in a SUV... He looked over and started laughing his ass off. It was pretty funny.
