61.1 mpg! Boo-yah!

Reading the manual, I found that the little bar below the mpg readout, the one that was continually zooping around between 5 and 150 (and beyond), was a indicator of the instantaneous mpg the car is getting.

You can imagine the effect this has. If you imagine something like, "Huh! When I coast, the mpg goes off the scale! I'm going to coast all the way to the next stopsign!" you're not far off the mark for me, at least.

It's like a video game, and I played it on the way home from gaming Sunday. "I want to average better than 50 mpg on the way home," I thought to myself starting off. "The EPA says that's the range I should be getting, and I've got time..." So I watched the zoopy little bar, and got it pegged around 55 while doing around 63, which was fine by me. Then, as the average mileage kept creeping up (because the time spent coasting was time spent at more than 150 mpg), I got hooked. There were times--I blush to admit--that I was doing 55. Lower, even, for a faltering moment or two. Oh, the shame! On the highway, in a sleek little new car, doing 55! Oh, I hide my head. I'd ruled out ever buying a red car because of the speeds I drive, and now I'm driving like my grandmother! I tell you, palpable embarassment.

Anyway, I'm not going to do that again. Nope. No way. I had the itch, I scratched the itch. From now on, back to driving like a joyful cheetah. No doubt about it.

Yep.

Absolutely.

Check out the reflections of the building across the street in the side of the car... Mm. :)
