That was a darn good concert! You might not expect it from their schtick, but the Bloodhag guys are good at the music they do. Also, they're smart, and fun to hang around.
I mean, I don't know much about metal; the farthest I've gotten into the genre is Metallica, which I suspect hardly counts. But the Bloodhag stuff induced dancing without even alcohol. (And by dancing I mean headbanging and bouncing around.) And so far as I could tell, it hung together without fault. The songs were different from each other, and musical... I liked it enough to buy one of their CDs.
You should go see them! Particularly since on the way down, in Oregon, their van blew a head gasket. They had to cancel a bunch of shows (everything but the West Coast), and rent a van from one of the insanely expensive rental places like Enterprise or something to continue their tour... Such nice young men, out to improve literacy...
These are shows you might be able to catch:
San Francisco, tomorrow (5/18/05), 9:00 at Elbo Room (647 Valencia)
LA, Friday (5/20/05)
Portland, (5/27/05... unless they've moved it up due to the van-based cancellations)
This time I got one of the books they threw! Two, actually, but I think there was about a book per attendee, and I passed off my extra to a guy who'd missed getting one. So now I have a copy of Ray Bradbury's _The Illustrated Man_.
I was concerned when I showed up at 7 that there would be more people in the band than in the audience, but it filled in well, and the band guys said their similar fears were put to rest. The band was set up just a bit forward of the Zelazny section, with each player sort of tucked into an alcove full of books, and the audience clumped in other alcoves and around the cash register.
Afterwards I hung around and talked to Cliff (
obadiah, going to WisCon) and his friend Harry (also going to WisCon) and the band guys (not going to WisCon) a bit, but I hadn't eaten, so I eventually abandoned further hanging out and fled back to the warm glow of the internet.
Oh, also, Destruction of the Endless was in the audience with a nifty digital camera. Alas, he didn't say he was going to put the photos he was taking of the band playing up on the web. I hope when he sends them the photos, they put them up.
Oh, and despite the tight quarters, nothing got stepped on or broken, no beers were spilled on books... Remarkably damage-free! Such a concert might even happen again! I did my part, for in poking around I found that Dark Carnival had four new copies of Graeme Base's _Jabberwocky_ for only $9 each, and I bought two of them. So you need not feel too dreadful for having missed this one.
