Aliens of the Deep
Feb. 1st, 2005 09:14 pmIf you're at all interested in space and the exploration thereof, you need to go see "Aliens of the Deep." That movie kicked ass. Yeah, I'm talking to you,
obadiah,
whumpdotcom,
arden_ranger. (And
arden_ranger, you ok? Been awhile since I've heard a peep from you.)
Anyway, I'd heard about "Aliens of the Deep" briefly from radio ads and I was like "eh", but Silent E wanted to go see it because of the photo in the paper of a giant octopus attacking the undersea rover. (Which turned out to be in fact not the undersea rover, but a little bot the rover sent out. Neat scene.) For those of you who haven't heard, it's an IMAX movie (shot in 3-D! Which I've never experienced before... It was great!) directed I think by James Cameron, about exploration of the life 3000 meters down in the ocean around undersea vents, the life that as they point out would go on just fine if the sun went out... And they tie this throughout to the idea of exploring the life that may live in Europa's oceans.
Brilliant shots. The great watery chasms, the strange lumpy landscapes... Set my science fictional heart a-fluttering. And the life shots! 3000 meter-deep shrimp thicker than blades of grass! Solitary albino crabs on shadowy arches! And I swear to god,
obadiah, there's a octopus checking the undersea rover out on purpose.
And the human scenery is good, too. Hot NASA guy, several hot scientist girls. Movie's got something for everyone.
I always thought it would be impossibly cool to be part of the first group of humans to make contact with aliens. It hadn't occurred to me that I might be weeping with emotion. Hm. Note to self. Bring a kleenex.
$10 well-spent.
