My parents tend to get us something scented for our stockings each year, and since I go through talcum powder and lotion at a glacial pace, it's all still with me. My sock drawer seems to have accumulated much of it, so all the bright-colored socks from the 80s that I never wear are perfused with a lovely rose/sandalwood scent...

Now recently, for some reason, the skin on the backs of my hands and wrists has been dry; so I turn to the lotion for the first time in the year. I have two bottles of rose-scented lotion, and I seem to recall that one was a better blend of scents than the other... Been using the more accessible one, but today I decided to reach a foot further and pull down the other one to figure out if it's the better. Unscrew the top, shake it down once to get some onto the back of my wrist... Some light yellow liquid (yes, liquid) goes shooting out, my hand breaking its stream into a shower. "Shhh-oot!"

In the intervening years, the stuff separated out.

My carpet is now scented of roses. Ah, well, could be worse.

  • roses
  • lilacs
  • wood glue (the yellow stuff)
  • science fiction books from the 60s
  • the inside of the wrapper of a piece of Wrigley's spearmint gum
  • lillies of the valley
  • hot fabric (ironed, or out of the dryer)
  • wet stone

I'm looking forward to seeing what scented thing shows up in my stocking this year. If any; no worries, not like I'm lacking.

My sister's husband brought to our family an excellent tradition: everyone gets a stocking, and everyone sneaks around Christmas night filling everyone else's stocking. Thus, everyone springs for a nifty little thing or two thus making stockings less predictable and more generally spiffy, and even the parents get cool loot.

I really love getting people nifty doodads.
