When I first came out to the Bay Area, met some people at ACNW, and got into the first gaming group here, I ended up playing Rye, because she's so damn simple. 1. She's female; no fuss about the proper pronouns ftf. 2. She's based around Strength and Endurance, which no one else wants. 3. She's from my character class of blunt, bluff, compassionate but not considered. I never had to think in game about what she'd do; she did whatever came off the end of my tongue.

One of the most amusing bits that happened in that entire years-long campaign (many years long, yes, but only about 26 sessions long—oy!) was when she decided to investigate a Paranoia-like shadow, the site of convoluted cloak-and-dagger infighting between Bleys and Caine, who were stealing back and forth the position as the masked Leader... She rode in on her iron horse, in a dress, with a sword, and got her retreat cut off by air support with guns and lasers. So she rode straight ahead into the camp of the army mustering to throw off their mysterious Bleys/Caine leader and demanded to talk to the guys in charge.

There she was, under a sort of arrest by the completely bemused generals, flirting and dodging questions about what exactly these strangely-powerful Amberites were, while at the same time suggesting that she knew enough about them to have valuable information to trade, and in fact, was one of them, and would be mercilessly avenged should something happen to happen to her as she was surrounded by all those laser pistols... Eventually the generals went off to baffledly confer with each other about what to do with her (torture? mind control? and yet she just walked on in as if she had nothing to fear from us...), and she shadowwalked out.

Later, filling Julian in on all this, he asked her how she'd managed to present a credible threat when she was so easily captured.
Oh, I just told them that I was the weakest and most foolish of all of you, Rye says airily.
Julian, nonplussed: That wouldn't have occurred to me.

One of the coolest aspects of Rye's character, so cool that I'll no doubt bring it into future Amber games, was her iron horse, Atcheson. Horse; made of iron. Hah! Smart, loyal, and perhaps as good in a fight as she was. He was a make-nice gift from Bleys, who had caused at least two or three of her previous horses to be shot out from under her as the tracked him through Shadow. And she was from a Spanish/Mexican culture big on horses, so she'd really been holding that against him...

Everyone else assumed that Bleys, sleaze that he was, had made the horse a trojan; but she trusted it, and her trust was never broken. Lot of fun times like the one when the horse got abandoned somewhere where crystals grew all through it, and she took it off to a shadow where a mad scientist fixed it up again, casually paying him with worldshattering knowledge like "how to rifle a gunbarrel"... She fed the horse scrap steel, ball bearings, and copper wire. God, it was great. :)

A vague idea of Rye had arisen many years back, in a throne war of [livejournal.com profile] mtfierce's, when I was naming oneshot characters after alcohol. Because, hey, alcohol has nice resonances. Rye had Spanish influences because that proto-Rye had managed to grab the Jewel of Judgement, and was wearing it so that her weasley relatives couldn't burgle it from her rooms.
Can we see that she's wearing it? they asked.
No, I said, It's under a poncho.
A poncho?!
Yeah... She's hispanic, I said, out of my ass.
Ah, thone wars.

Anyway... Her mission in life was to do the best she could by her father, Eric, trying to keep him from making himself out as a total putz. Which really was a necessary job. But the campaign drifted away from Eric's failed bid for the throne, and for all that she gained the desire to poke her nose into all sorts of Amberish schemes and try to sort things out amongst the rest of the putzes in the family, she was still to a degree spinning her wheels.
