Vorkosigan ramblings
Sep. 1st, 2004 12:43 pmHee. I hadn't really considered the possibility of Vorkosigan fanfic. I think the difference is that setups like Amber or Potter are wide open, with a large cast; you can easily conceive of interesting things happening just off-camera. The Vorkosiverse, on the other hand, focuses a bit more on one character (Miles) and people who are his supporting cast. Bujold's Chalion seems like a more ripe environment for fanfic (and gaming), as she's set up the background very well and is mixing it up more with the cast so far...
I'm looking forward to seeing how Genevieve Cogman makes a good game out of the Vorkosiverse. If she really is the Maya who wrote The Tragical History of Eric, King of Amber I fully trust her grasp of character, situation, and style, and her writing ability. Anyone want to comment on how much of the cover price she's likely to be taking home? I'd heard that the next edition GURPS books were likely to be in the $40 range, which is kinda damn steep... Then again, I suppose I support every single person that money's going to.
I listed "Beta Colony" as my Planet of Residence to mix things up a bit (Earth? everyone's from Earth), but also because I feel very Betan. Not just the casual acceptance of clones, the aggressive egalitarianism, and the amazement at water... Somehow, (much as I have to think a bit before realizing that people don't regenerate,) I can't help but think when I hear of or see a pregnant lady, "Why isn't she using a uterine replicator? I'm definitely going to use a replicator..."
sigh.
