Just got back from an all-Gershwin concert by the San Francisco Symphony. They started with something orchestral (or maybe it was a whole group of somethings in a medley), and then when that was done, they brought out the pianist. As he walked across the stage, the conductor pulled out the bench and lifted the cover off the keys of the piano.

And it grinned. With its keys, dead center front of the stage, the conductor flopping around behind it, the piano grinned and breathed Showtime. It was the kind of grin that obviated the necessity to crack ones knuckles, shake the kinks from the chain of the nunchucks... I knew that something badass inhabited that piano. I knew that that piano could spring to life like a bull unbound by gravity, flipping and flapping around Davies Concert Hall to defend...

It was nice to share a hall with it. I wonder how it got that way.

Maybe a careless performer or even a piano tuner bled on it, and it discovered it liked the taste?

Hm... I associate "enjoying blood" with "evil", and the piano wasn't evil... Wasn't even scary, like guys who have a foot more height and twice as much weight than me are scary. Its motivations were different enough from human motivations that I didn't feel it would snap and be dangerous. Though, on the other hand, maybe I shouldn't be taking "inhuman" as "breathe a sigh of relief"... ;)
