Live and direct from [livejournal.com profile] mtfierce, iiit's an involved personal movie trivia thing!

First movie you can remember seeing?

The first movie I actually remember seeing? I think it has to be "Howard the Duck," which I saw the first half of at the house of a friend maybe when I was ...eight? Only the first half, see, because it scared me so badly that I ran home. So I don't know if it counts. When they were cloning him from his feathers to kill him or something...

Last movie you saw that you loved?

I quite enjoyed "Spider-Man 2", which I saw last Thursday. But the last movie that won a place in my heart? Hm... Which came later, "Pirates of the Carribean" or "Bubba Ho-Tep"?

First movie you saw on a date?

"Dick Tracy," which I watched while sitting on the floor of someone's house with the guy I was dating at the time... This was also cut short, as two of the other people watching the movie took to making out on the couch, and as the rest of us one by one noticed, we sort of drifted away, until they were alone in the room. Rather embarassing for all.

First movie you can remember that you disagreed strongly with the critics/reviews about?

At the moment, all that's springing to mind is the review the San Francisco Chronicle's guy gave about the X-Men movie... In which he basically said, "Yeah, well, it doesn't really gel for me, since Senator Kelley is right, the mutants will wipe us all out..." Aaaaaarg! Wap wap wap wap! If you knew anything (anything at all!) about Science, you'd be a Science writer, now wouldn't you?! The existance of black-haired people does not mean that the extinction of red-haired people is inevitable! Fool!

Er... Not that I've taken sides on that one, or anything.
Heh.

What movie have you dreamed about?

Hm... I dreamed about something like "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds"... I was sitting on the floor of Neil Gaiman's office, going through his filing cabinets, and I'd pulled out some laminated color copies of oil pastel drawings from a Miyazaki thing he was working on, which was like "Nausicaa." Eventually in that diffident British way of his he kind of mentioned that he had to go and would like to lock things up...

A secret thing you did in a darkened theater:

Threw stuff at the ill-mannered little ass who was loudly mocking "for us" one of the characters in one of the theatrical releases of some "Star Wars" flick... And I definitely pegged him several times, looking innocent there in the dark each time he turned around.

Ever lied about something so you could see a movie?

I ditched class to go see "Star Wars" re-released Friday the first day it was out... I don't remember if there was lying involved.

The worst movie you ever saw and the best thing about it:

"Godzilla, the 'American' version." Everyone involved should be shot and sent to roast in Hell for a couple of decades. Except Jean Reno.

Your favorite movie and the worst thing about it:

I'm going to say "Tombstone." Worst thing? Well, since I showed it to [livejournal.com profile] obadiah, I've been feeling a little bit embarrassed at some of Kurt Russell's scenery-chewing. I'm sure that'll wear off, though.

A movie you’re embarrassed to admit you enjoyed:

I don't get embarassed, I get contrary. "Adventures in Babysitting" was a really great movie.

Best adaptation of a novel?

"The Princess Bride." Far, far better than the book.

One person you’ve never seen a movie with but would like to sometime:

It seems strange to me that I have never seen a movie with [livejournal.com profile] cochese.

What kind of movie you’d like to see with that person:

Something completely mockable, utterly bad, but not repulsive.

To understand something about you, people need to see this movie:

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." "I can't swim." "What are you, crazy? The fall'l probably kill ya!"

Movie that surprised you (with plot twists, etc.) the most?

I'm stuck. Generally, I go to a movie and drop myself into the experience; I don't stay separate enough to think, "Ah, I bet this will happen," so I'm not surprised when it doesn't. And in cases of movies where there's something so obviously coming that I pick up on it, it's never (so far as I can think) failed to arrive. Hm... I suppose I was surprised by what an utter cretin they made M in "The World is Not Enough".

List by title: saddest/ funniest/ scariest/ overrated/ underrated:

Saddest: "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka." No, really. There's a scene in it that brings tears to my eyes still. There's this pimp. He's been in jail since the 70s, and he gets out. Like he's been looking forward to all those years, he puts on his best clothes and goes strolling through the neighborhood. But these clothes were the height of fashion in the 70s—we're talking great big wide-brimmed hat, platform shoes with live goldfish swimming around in the heels... People are pointing and laughing. I think we, the audience, are supposed to be pointing and laughing. His dream turning to ashes in his mouth, he begins to hurry his stride, to more pointing and laughing. He trips. The goldfish shoes break. There's a shot of the goldfish dying on the pavement.

Funniest: There's gotta be something that had me laughing 'til I hurt, but I can't remember it. Right now, I think the one that brings me the most cackling-to-myself moments is "Mystery Men". "Don't start that *again*. Lance Hunt wears glasses. Captain Amazing *doesn't* wear glasses." "He takes them off when he transforms." "That doesn't make any sense, he wouldn't be able to see."

Scariest: When I was about 12, suddenly movies lost the power to scare me. But then, I've avoided the ones I hear are the worst, "The Shining" and "The Ring"... And the whole genre of scary movies, really... So the scariest moment I can think of is those flesh-eating beetles in "The Mummy".

Overrated: "The Matrix." Yeah, bust out that disco-fu, Keanu.

Underrated: "Mystery Men."

A movie you haven’t seen yet but you really want to?

"Licence to Kill". Timothy Dalton was hot, I tell you. At least, he was hot in "The Lion in Winter," and I want to see what he did with Bond. What I hear "serious, Fleming-like" sounds good.

A movie character you could really relate to, or even wish you could be like?

The first that comes to mind is Ash, from "Army of Darkness." He's an asshole, but on the other hand, "It's a trick. Get an axe."

Movie that the person you got this from reminds you of:

[livejournal.com profile] mtfierce, eh? For some reason, "Rob Roy" is the first to spring to mind. But I could be wrong; been a long time since I've seen either of them.

When I say the word, you say the first movie that comes to mind:

The word? What word is that? "The only word is love" --> the Beatles --> "Help!," I suppose, though I've never seen it. (Damn, the only song on "Rubber Soul" that I can't stand, and now it's running through my head...) The next movie that comes to mind is "The Magic Christian," which I actually have seen.

If you were a movie what genre would you be filed under at the video store?

I'm feeling like "The Professional"... So, Action, I imagine.

Saddest

Today it occurred to me that "Schindler's List" was the saddest movie I've seen...

No doubt more of these realizations will hit over time.
