I just now took a pickle break, only to find that all of the plastic utensils that usually live on top of the minifridge had been cleared away. Bedamned if I was going to fish pickles out of the bottom of a long thin jar with my fingers... But I didn't want to have to walk all the way down to the lunchroom, either. My luck was golden, though--I checked my desk for extra utensils, and found a pair of disposable wooden chopsticks.

Brilliant! Fishing pickles out of a jar has always been a struggle-- they slide off forks or break in half, they dodge spoons and come up soaked in picklejuice, and knives are just ...messy. Chopsticks, though--ace! I'm not sure if I've ever hit on a better use for them!

I tend to use chopsticks when eating Oriental food, or for stirring and flipping smallish things in our teflon pans, or for fishing things out that have fallen down next to the flames of the burners. On several occasions Asian people have expressed surprise that I can use them... It's kinda odd. I mean, of course I can use chopsticks. Using chopsticks, like many other Asian things, is "cool." Going to that dollar Chinese place in high school and using a fork? Dude, I was lame enough without actively trying...

(Sadly, that dollar Chinese place was, in fact, right next door to a veterinarian's. Can't miss all of the stereotypes all of the time.)
