Having just found [livejournal.com profile] aiyume's place, I've also just found that there's something being done about George Lucas's insistence that only the "Special Editions" of the Star Wars trilogy will be released on DVD... Or at least, there's an online petition. ;)

Han Shoots First

I chose that particular banner because Han is hot. The reasons I want the theatrical versions of the Star Wars trilogy on DVD are: the new explosions look hokey, the new storm-troopers-riding-iguanas thing looks like it was cut and pasted in and merely delays the plot, the scene with Jabba in Star Wars is just horrible, and... Two burning skeletons? Did I really need to see that?

Here's to hoping.

Han shot first, dammit.

Amen!

Yes, I am one of many people that firmly believe that Lucas should have left the originals intact. Just because something can be done doesn't mean should be done.

Han was morally ambiguous at that point in Star Wars. His morals were whatever was convientant for him at the time.

He was, god love him, a smuggler, a rogue, a scoundrel who worked for whoever would pay him, no matter how shady or bad they were, and once he got paid he didn't care what they did with the cargo and his first priority was Han.

It wasn't till later that he 'grew' into a hero. Having Greedo shoot first takes away from the impact of that growth. In my opinion, messing with the character growth that was so important in the originals was a bad idea and it changes the movie for a lot of people from the movie we loved into something different. Consequently, I haven't bought any of the Special Editions of the original Trilogy, nor will I, because, to me they are no longer the same movies.

I just absolutely hate when the producers go back and change their movies now just because they can. Case in point: I hated ET, but going back and changing the Fed's guns to walkie talkies was just stupid. How scary is that supposed to be? "Ohmygod! They've got walkie talkies! Whatever shall we do?!"

I want Star Wars on DVD. I want the original, unretouched Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the ones I feel in love with in the theater and went to see over and over and over again.

Damn straight!

You make a great point about Han. That part never really impacted on me because I could never tell who shot first... But your analysis of his character there is spot-on.

And I'm with you on ET, too. That whole "walkie-talkie" thing is just friggin' dumb.
