zdashamber: painting - a frog wearing a bandanna (Default)

Y'know, I've subtitled this LJ "light thoughts and gaming," and until now that's been a misnomer, and even now, this will only very briefly touch on gaming, in that just now I was looking on Bible Gateway for Mark 8:36. You know it--in the King James Bible, it runs,
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
See, I very much fear that tomorrow my character Joanna will have to quit her job saving the world because it's making her into a bad person, and that will probably be the quote she uses. So I was reading through Mark to get context for that, and I realized... Wait. Jesus is called the "Son of man".

Remember my post about Derbys? I'm thinking ahead to Halloween, when (unlike last Halloween) I'd like to have a costume that doesn't require me freezing my (already miniscule) tits off. It came to me last year--that Magritte painting of the guy with an apple for a face! I adore Magritte, and that's an iconic bit of his work, a fitting tribute. And that guy is wearing a nice warm suit.

Last night I was looking at that picture, to make sure I got an appropriate hat, and I noticed it was called "The Son of Man."

So, is that guy Jesus? Why the apple? Let's say it's Eve's apple—is Magritte saying that the fall blocks the face of God from us? But then, the apple—it's the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. Why would our knowledge of good and evil block us from seeing God? Perhaps he's suggesting that faith is more important than knowledge? It's the end of the day in the painting, so maybe he's suggesting it's kinda crucial that we figure this out before the light fades... I'll have to check to see if he was a Christian. Or is it the dawn? Or just a storm?

And why is Jesus's left hand in darkness? Kinda sinister.

*groans* Bad Madeline. No doughnut.

Why would our knowledge of good and evil block us from seeing God?

Gaining that knowledge did get us kicked out of the Garden. No one has actually seen God since. Burning bushes are a manifestation, but they are not God.

Perhaps he's suggesting that faith is more important than knowledge?

Isn't that the whole point? We're supposed to have faith that God exists, faith in His Word and His Love. We have no real knowledge of Him, no proof. Only Faith.

Hee hee hee hee hee!

As for the rest, in looking for information on his religion (no love so far), I found a quote:
"Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see." - Rene Magritte on the Son of Man
