Right next to my work building is a little gas station run by a friendly Albanian immigrant. It's got a sub sandwich deli with tasty bread, where they recently gave me a free sandwich in recognition of my patronage; and a magazine rack where I often am tempted into buying Scientific American. It's also got an area well-stocked with gas-station-like snack foods, where I pick up pre-wrapped brownies to tide me through the long afternoon hours.

Some weeks ago, I was shocked and delighted to find that they also stocked jars of mini Kosher dill pickles. I've never seen dill pickles made from those shorter-than-a-finger cucumbers. They're so crunchy and perfect! Pickles, in my family, have always been a well-loved and highly-respected foodstuff, both sweet and dill... I was thrilled to find when I came to California that such a thing as dill relish existed.

At work there's a mini-fridge usually used to store leftovers, but perfectly capable of holding the jar of pickles. I just now finished them off...

Mmmmmm. Dear god, nothing hits the spot like dill pickles. $3 has bought me happiness....
