Hello, my dear ones! Sad-ish news from the Bay Area: Poppy Fabrics, the store of uberfancy hippie textiles, has lost its lease and the owners are retiring. Its last day is Sunday. I happened by today and bought a bunch of $2 patterns, and will no doubt go back tomorrow, so if anyone wants to make their own frilly Kaylee-from-Firefly dress, I saw something like that there.

But! The joyous news: the cardboard rolls the fabric comes on are in a couple bins, which say "Free".

These are truly excellent cardboard tubes: solid, and yet light. A tube like this could be yours.

I had to download a program to get that photo to you (since PhotoGIMP bit it: now trying "proto" GIMP, and apparently I need to work on saving things as jpgs so they don't look mangy). But no doubt the stirring samurai spirit even now welling up within you at the sight repays the trouble.

If you are in the Bay Area, or will be in the Bay Area in the next few months, I can get you a few tubes. If you want to chip in a bit for butcher paper to protect the tube, and postage, I checked at the post office and apparently a 6' tube can be mailed. They range from about 1.5"-3" in diameter, and about 4' to 6' in height. The narrower ones also seem rather like they would be good lightsabers. Just sayin'...

I just learned this weekend that increasing the exposure time makes for spiffy pictures. Also, photos at sunset are generally fun. :)
