Well, not that horribly. But while in the past I've heard it as "your favorite line of the song" this time it's "the first line of the song (with the title blanked out, if it's in there)". Specifically:

Step 1: Put your media player on random.
Step 2: Post the first line(s) of the first 25 songs that play
Step 3: Everyone guesses/brags about the ones they know in the comments, even if they've already been guessed

EDIT: Oh! And I definitely need to thank [livejournal.com profile] follybard and [livejournal.com profile] arenson9 for bringing this to mind again! I noted what's been gotten so far and added more lyrics to the rest.

I'm going to try this with the first couple lines, to make it a bit more likely to catch you if you know it. Some are really, really easy. One is hard. Several are related, with the player hanging out in hotspots. These are lyrics based on my hearing of the song, so caveat emptor.

1. Well I sympathize completely but there's nothing I can do / I am just a humble servant / with a message here for you
Gotten by [livejournal.com profile] obadiah

Gotten by [livejournal.com profile] rikibeth
12. Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue / thought I heard you talking softly

Seekrit Bonus Round:

I note there are songs unguessed in previous iterations...

The mix was a bit random... That's what you get from a fresh load of the songs without history of listening for the player to compare to. Even after I left off all the ones that I skipped past instead of listening to, it's not so much of what I'm listening to these days. Partly because I haven't gotten a new dose of mp3s for a long time... Back to CDs. Sad.

#16 sounds like the Beatles, but it isn't. It's Badfinger, written by McCartney, for "The Magic Christian".

That said, I do really miserably on the others. ;)

5. With a Little Help from My Friends, the Beatles
15. Me and Bobby McGee, Janis Joplin
17. All My Loving, the Beatles.
20. Desperado, the Eagles, IIRC.

13. Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Cyndi Lauper I only recognize this because of Karaoke Revolution
15. Me and Bobby McGee. Janis Joplin (lyrics and music Kris Kristofferson).

D'oh! Looking at it again, I have no idea why I said "When I'm 64", since a) When I'm 64 starts with "When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now", and b) it's obviously "A Little Help from My Friends" which (unlike When I'm 64) I know by heart:

What would you do if I sang out of tune,
would you stand up and walk out on me.
Lend me an ear and a I'll sing you a song,
and I'll try not to sing out of key.
Mmm, I get by with a little help from my friends,
gonna try with a little help from my friends.

Do you need anybody?
I just need someone to love
Could it be anybody?
I just want someone to love

What do I do when my love is away
(Does it worry you to be alone?)
How do I feel at the end of the day
(Are you sad because you're on your own)

No, I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm, I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm. Gonna try with a little help from my friend

(Repeat Do you need anybody)

Do you believe in love at first sight?
Yes, I'm certain that it happens all the time
What do you see when you turn out the light?
I can't tell you but I know it's mine

(Repeat I get by, then repeat Do you need anybody)

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends,
with a little help from my friends

#9 is "Marion" by Steven Brust (and I would not have recognized it if I had not recently ripped the disc)

#11 is Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend, and I don't know whose version you have. Marilyn Monroe? Carol Channing? Or (shudder) Madonna?

Date: 2007-04-06 08:50 pm (UTC)

"Marion" was the one I figured was Hard. I practically had to go find Brust in person to get a copy of that CD... :)

I have the Marilyn Monroe version. Sounds like the best, given the options... Eek.

Once I ripped the disc, I gave it (inscribed copy) back to [livejournal.com profile] shadowflyer. Guess he hasn't given it a recent listen.

I didn't bother guessing the ones that had already been identified, but I did know quite a few. Including knowing that #23 was "Going to California" by Led Zeppelin and not a Dead song. I listened to Zeppelin IV almost as many times as I listened to the White Album in junior high.

I actually got my mp3s of that CD from [livejournal.com profile] aiyume... But the first couple lines are hard to fish out of memory, becuase they could be so many other songs that start with waking up and leaving.

Speaking of songs you got mp3s of from me (that looks awfully tortured written out, but hopefully it's clear enough)...

#1 sounded familiar to me, so I googled the lyrics. I swore up a storm when I found out what song it was. I've probably listened to the album 100 times since the 80s when I first got it. Like the average person not knowing the song for "Dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh..."

{sigh}

Some Songs I Know

Date: 2007-04-09 06:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] obadiah.livejournal.com
1. "Can't Take It With You." The Alan Parsons Project. Pyramid
5. "With a Little Help From My Friends." The Beatles (featuring Ringo as Billy Shears). Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Side one, track two. (Yes, I have listened to that album just a little bit....)
6. "Surfer Girl." The Beach Boys. Don't know the original LP on that one.
15. "Me and Bobby McGee." Janis Joplin (though her version is a cover).
18. "The Wells-Fargo Wagon." The Music Man.
17. "All My Loving." The Beatles. Different albums, depending on whether you follow the Capital or EMI releases.
19. "Box of Rain." The Grateful Dead. American Beauty. Side one, track one. (Again, I've heard this one more than once or twice.) This is the song I sang to my paternal grandmother when she lay dying, shortly before what would have been her 102nd birthday.
20. "Desperado." The Eagles. I heard Joe Walsh perform this as a member of the first incarnation of Ringo's All-Starr Band. Since this song is really more of a Don Henley Eagles piece than a Joe Walsh Eagles piece, the performance led one of my friends who was there to quip, "What's he going to play next, 'Boys of Summer?'"
21. "Boat on the River." Styx. Cornerstone. Written by Tommy Shaw, this piece was a huge international hit for them, but it's far from their best known song within the US.
