Interestingly, in the last few days I've had a feeling that my luck is something I can lean on. On Saturday, I went to the Oakland Airport to fly out on standby, since my flight to my parents's in Denver on Wednesday was cancelled by the blizzard. (This scheme was less fun than I'd expected. [...pause] Yeah, Southwest's standby system at OAK is a bit screwy. There are at least two customer service desks which handle standby for different flights, and then apparently sometimes you handle it at the gate the flight is leaving from, and of course all the employees were hassled by the holiday and Denver shutdown... So I got sent away from the proper line to walk to the end of the terminal and stand through the wrong line, and then sent back to the right line, and then I got on a list and went to stand in another line for what turned out to just be the hell of it...)

But, I got a flight out to Las Vegas, dashing onto the plane just before they sealed it. The flight continued on to Salt Lake City, where I had a ticket waiting for me Sunday... But the flight was delayed in Vegas past the point that I could catch a flight out of SLC to Denver. But! There were three flights leaving Vegas that evening for Denver. So I leaped.

The gate agent at the SLC flight, as I told him I wasn't continuing, was an ass... "If you have a flight in Salt Lake, you ought to take it!" ::the bland smile of as-you-like-it:: "Well, it'll cost you $177 to change!" No, because my flight on Wednesday was cancelled, and all my standby attempts are now free. "If you don't make it out this evening you'll have to fend for yourself!" ::the bland smile of if-you'll-have-it-so:: But there's no fee, right? "::does not bother to respond, then sends me to the wrong gate, where there was at least no line to wait through until the gate agent corrected me::"

Then, as I waited standby for the first flight to Denver, he came up to that gate and told another passenger, "I have to work to help this lady who really screwed herself up! She had a flight to Salt Lake City tomorrow, but she chose to fly standby today..." ::putting earplugs back in:: I mean, shit, I was sitting ten feet away. My orange parka is pretty freaking distinctive, and he had nothing to do with where I was on the standby list (set before I even talked to him) or the Denver flight at all. Spend your Christmas drinking, friend! It makes all the bad customers go away!

But, the thing is, though all this I had basically no fear that I'd be left with my ass in the breeze. It all worked out pretty much as I planned: get to OAK, get to one of the connecting cities (preferably LAS, due to affinity with [livejournal.com profile] kit_kindred), get to Denver in time to go to the family Christmas party at my grandmother's house Sunday. Where we played poker and I came out with 320% of what I went in with (I won $11. Woo! Now I'm up in my general poker-with-friends-for-money situation!) A lot of luck is observation, patience, and attitude... But some of luck is just luck.

So, here's wishing you guys all a happy holiday season, and lots of luck in the New Year.

Cool that you made it there OK. I generally find I just have to be prepared to have delays and be patient with air travel. Also, going by yourself makes everything a lot easier.

Did you get anything good for Christmas?
