I'm feeling really good about my Halloween costume this year. I figured I'd do someone from Yellow Submarine, since I like the Beatles, and the animation makes for identifiable costumes. Perusing the images, looked like Paul was the one most likely to have findable costume pieces these days... I think it was the pants. One of the great blessings of this era is that bellbottoms are in again, and tan ones? Hell, I wanted a pair of those anyway for everyday wear.

This idea hinged on finding a purple jacket. So I went down to the Salvation Army in downtown, and wouldn't ya know, there was a nigh-perfect-colored purple suit, nearly the right shaped jacket. Sweet. And it means I could at some future time be the Joker... The Joker in capris, admittedly. I wonder for what purpose a purple bermuda-short suit entered the world.

The rest of the costume pieces came together after that, in various thrilling hunts. The wig was a particularly neat find. "Geeky schoolboy" and "Beatle" apparently share the same hair.

Last night was fun as I made alterations to give the jacket a proper waist... With a stapler. High-class operation, here. And of course the proper shirts were guy's shirts, but once I tacked the collar in 3 inches, the shirt works great. Likewise the tie is given form with masking tape. But those who don't read this LJ? Will be unable to tell.

Digression: I rented out Yellow Submarine to make sure I knew what I was doing, and watched it Wednesday. It reminded me of "Mirrormask", in that it was soaked through with an aesthetic that was surreal and artistic, sometimes just for the sake of good surreal art. The plot is really good, if you're willing to go with it; it moves at an easy pace so that you don't miss out on the "smelling the flowers" bits, but it's well-done. The funny bits really are funny; the discussion of whether to save Ringo from a sea of monsters as he's screaming around in circles was great. The puns were hilarious. I bet this movie scarred me for life, in a good way, when I saw it as a wee thing, because now I appreciate everything about it. As I said, the plot is well-done: things happen for good reasons, there are neat ideas presented, and the success at the end isn't just about beating the bad guy down and feels more final for that.

And the music kicks ass. I mean, "Hey Bulldog", on a tape, is not bad, but in the movie it rocked. Likewise with "A Little Help From My Friends." I guess this is why people like music videos.

I liked the voices a lot, too. ;)

All of you with kids, you should show them Yellow Submarine and get them started on the right foot. I liked it enough to maybe wake up early on Sunday and watch it again before I have to return it. End Digression.

I love this holiday. It's going to be a crapload of fun. So neat to adapt things artistically. In January, I picked up a huge pile of blue battery-operated string rice lights on sale at Ikea... I bet those will light up jack-o-lanterns with beautiful creepiness.
