Mar. 10th, 2004 03:14 pmI give a lot of thought to architecture and design. Back in high school I took a computer drafting course that I found rather fun (I would be more effusive, but it was at 7:10 in the morning). I remember one of our projects was to take a house plan from a magazine and put in all of the electrical stuff--locate outlets and switches, decide what switches should be two-way, etc. I boggled the teacher by presenting a plan with a 6-way switch... But c'mon, the courtyard needed a light, and there were 5 doors into it and a hot tub. Are you supposed to carry around a remote? Sheesh. ;)
I've never lived in a house where the locations of outlets was considered--that is to say, I've never lived in a house where all of the outlets didn't end up behind heavy furniture. I mean, really. Don't these people even stop to imagine where a bed would go in this room? It would go on the inside wall, where the cold is the least, right? The wall where you put the room's only outlet, remember?
I think one of my mottos as an architect would be, "Don't bother to ask if this room could use another outlet. The answer is always yes." (Maybe my trouble is that lately I've been living in turn-of-the-century places. I suppose I'm lucky that the latest has grounded outlets--the last place didn't. The local hardware store did a brisk business in 2-prong to 3-prong adaptors. My computer survived. It's all good...)
