I was going somewhere else with this. Hm.
Jun. 2nd, 2005 11:48 pmI just saw "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds" again. My god, now that's what a movie should be. On the way out, someone was saying that every time they see it, it gets better. Yeah, I'll buy that.
I saw it in the theater of the Pacific Film Archive. They're doing a Studio Ghibli film festival. I'll be getting to see handfuls of Miyazaki films I've never seen before, on a big screen... It's awesome, all you Bay Area folks should come.
The previous time I saw Nausicaa, it was a bootleg copy out of Malaysia or something, on a projector at
motleypolitico's house. The subtitles there, while with a bit of Engrish, were actually better than the Disney-distributed subtitles I saw this evening. For one, the bootleg used the term "Ohmu", which is far better than "Ohm", and fits what I hear. Most importantly, though, the bootleg used the term "God soldiers". "Giant soldiers"? The hell you say.
I cried pretty much all through the movie, and thinking about it still. I grew up on cold war science fiction. The threat of the destruction of the world is something I feel deeply. Got an echo of it off badger's post today. Naming photos I took Christmas, I remember looking at the huge piles of shiny wrapped presents and thinking, Such abundance, even in a recession... And what if this is the best it is? What if we look back and wish we were in this time again?
