What's on my calendar--January?
Jan. 3rd, 2005 08:27 pmI'm quite pleased with myself this year—I found a calendar I liked for a good price in August or September, bought it, found it again before the end of the year, transferred over all of my calendar data, and hung it before the first event I note: J.R.R. Tolkien's birthday, today. That's some damn rare togetherness. I mean, finding a calendar I like is remarkable all by itself... I've found two over the years, and both I've never been able to find again in years after. For calendars, I like art: photographs, there just doesn't seem to be enough there for a month of viewing. I like color. And then, finding 12 examples of colorful art I'd want to look at for a month assembled into one calendar? Apparently, very difficult. But this year I have 12 gorgeous Japanese woodcuts coming, and that's a bright thing to look forward to.
Anyway. Figure y'all might be interested to read a selection of the things I've bothered to note on the calendar and transfer from year to year...
3rd: J.R.R. Tolkien's Birthday
Handsel Monday (1st Mon. of year) -- give gift to bring good luck (Scottish belief)
6th: Sherlock Holmes's Birthday
7th: Elvis's Birthday
11th: Alexander Hamilton's Birthday (1757)
20th: St. Agnes's Eve - fast and dream of your future husband
27th: Lewis Carroll's Birthday
28th: Challenger 1986
What've you guys got on your calendars this month? I'm always curious to add new bits o' interest.
