You lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas

[livejournal.com profile] scalzi posted cheerfully on his blog, the Whatever, about how his wife was awesome: she'd gone out for an evening at a bar with her friends, a drunk hit on her all night despite pointed ignoring and tellings-off, the drunk went to grab her, and she pinned him against a wall and made him apologize and slink off. Yay! Instapundit, the pretend-libertarian, noted the post, and then his wife Dr. Helen posts a OMG FEMALES ARE TEH OPPRESSORS response. A bunch of mouthbreathing knuckledraggers go over to the Whatever and leave indeterminate ultra-sexist comments. John Scalzi is like, "Why are the commentors of my friends the fake-libertarians such cretins?"

I've never in my life seen a situation where the phrase "You lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas" is more apt. Why is it, John, that people who love smug poorly-argued sexist bullshit are themselves likely to produce smug poorly-argued sexist bullshit?

This all ties to a recent post of [livejournal.com profile] ginmar's:
"Are you sure?" is another way of invalidating a woman's ideas, of questioning her judgement, of changing the subject. How much of this second-guessing is part of women's daily lives, where they get people acting as if they're too stupid to think things through? Once you start noticing it, you can't stop, so my advice, is to notice it and keep noticing it---and then start calling people on it.
Notice how Dr. Helen says that only a man could possibly have learned when it was appropriate to apply violence to solve a problem?

I was thinking about writing about that. I was really offended with Scalzi posted a photo of his partner being all non-threatening and domestic.

Odd that Instapundit's "army of Davids" are all 6 inches tall and wearing jackboots.

Yeah, the guy who called Scalzi a douche wasn't too far off. One of his repeated failings is granting his friends benefit of the doubt to the point of absurdity. As failings go, could be worse, but on the other hand, you can tell a man by the company he keeps.

I only got a faint whiff of stench off the domestic smiley picture... In context, it was mostly posted in humor. But there was that tinge of "It's ok, she's hot and she cooks" that wasn't necessarily tongue-in-cheek.

Agreed, I found that photo troubling as well.

Oh, and I should add that I'm only a little disgusted at John, since all through the troglodyte-smacking he was on the side of the angels, and he's been a stalwart feminist in every discussion I've seen.

After looking over this mess, I am in complete and total agreement. It's rather amazing to consider how different discourse on the internet would be if it weren't so much of a libertarian playground.

Eh, you get dicks in all groups of humans, and there are some decent, honorable libertarians, like Jim Henley. I'm following his scheme when I call the Pundit couple "fake libertarians". What real libertarian would applaud giving the government unprecedented power while it needlessly wasted three hundred billion dollars?

I think the best part was the guy who said that John should have been taking care of Krissy instead of Krissy having to beat the guy down because unfortunately women can't do everything men can do... in the context of a post on Krissy beating the guy down.

Truly sometimes the evidence is powerless in the face of ideology.

The 'best' response for me was the one where the drunk becomes a poor lonely sad guy who just wanted some company. OMG we're all victims of the oppressive women!

This kind of brings up some irony about sexism, though. Not all men benefit equally from patriarchy, but look where they direct their anger.

The funniest line was "If you'd said that in these times Krissy couldn't afford to appear weak in the face of Drunkofascism, I'm sure about three quarters of your newest visitors would have understood."

Yet more evidence that the Internet, as the price of the good stuff it brings, also brings an inexhaustible source of garbage.

Not much you can do about it, really.

[identity profile] zdashamber.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
I figure that the garbage is there, and the Internet just flips over the rock and holds the flashlight while you stomp it.

*sigh* I was much happier with the original story of Krissy kicking righteous ass than with all this follow-on dreck.
