A great holiday, or what?

So, I just found out that today is the Jewish holiday Purim! Of which all I know is that the requirement is that you "get so drunk you that can't tell your right hand from your left." I know a bit about the archaeology behind that, and isn't the holiday about making fun of some group that once oppressed the Hebrews, and doesn't it involve cross-dressing...?

Anyway, sounds great! Can I join your religion for a day, [livejournal.com profile] obadiah?

(Alright, I confess. I googled to make sure I'd heard right, and found out that Purim was yesterday. Dangit!)

It does involve celebration of the tables being turned on one of the Hebrews' most notorious oppressors. I don't know if it's making fun, exactly, but when the story gets told, there is much noisemaking and jeering whenever the chief villain's name is read. There are costume parties and the like, but if it expressly involves cross-dressing, I was clearly brought up in too conservative a congregation.
